Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 minted Rs 230 crore in just three days. The film shattered several box office records in the international circuit. Here, we bring to you a list of the records it broke.

Director Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 managed to cross Rs 230 crore at the box office worldwide in just three days. The film is having an exceptional theatrical run in Tamil Nadu and in the international market. In fact, Ponniyin Selvan shattered several box office records overseas. Here, we bring to you a list of the records that Ponniyin Selvan shattered at the box office.

Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 hit the theatres on September 30 in multiple languages. The film is performing exceptionally well at the box office.

Director Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan grossed Rs 230 crore at the box office in three days. According to trade analyst Ramesh Bala, the film is doing great business in Tamil and in the overseas market. His tweet read, “#PS1 All-time No.1 Opening weekend for a Tamil movie in USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand (sic).”

Speaking to IndiaToday.in, Ramesh Bala said that Ponniyin Selvan raked in $4 million in the US. With this, the period drama grabbed the number 1 spot.

Not just in the US, Ponniyin Selvan is also wreaking havoc in the UAE, Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka.

We had earlier reported that Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan was released in IMAX. The film took a record opening in all the IMAX screens worldwide.

Ramesh Bala spoke to IndiaToday.in and said, “Out of the Rs 230 crore that Ponniyin Selvan made, nearly Rs 110-120 crore came from the overseas market. Before Ponniyin Selvan, it was Rajinikanth’s 2.0 that performed like this. However, 2.0 earned more than Rs 700 crore and that’s also because the film did well in Telugu and Hindi. It is to be noted that Ponniyin Selvan’s lion’s share comes from the Tamil version. The Telugu and Hindi contribution for Ponniyin Selvan is low. So, it is safe to say that Ponniyin Selvan is a biggest hit in Tamil Nadu.”

Ponniyin Selvan will end up making Rs 500-550 crore in its lifetime. “This sum is based on the collection in Tamil Nadu. While Ponniyin Selvan is a hit in these two areas, it may not be the same case in other states,” concludes Ramesh Bala.

Ponniyin Selvan is based on the popular Tamil literary novel of the same name, written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The period drama features Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Chiyaan Vikram, Trisha, Karthi and Jayam Ravi in lead roles. Prakash Raj, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, Lal and Vikram Prabhu were seen in supporting roles. Composer AR Rahman scored the tunes.
